This template is used in the etymology section. Use

{{مرکب|بخش نخست|بخش دوم|به صورت اختیاری بخش‌های دیگر|=}}

For instance, a simple etymology of placeholder could be created with:

{{مرکب|دوست|دختر|=}}

که نتیجه می‌دهد:

It also adds the entry to a category of the form "[Language name] compounds". English is the default Language name.

Alternative templates

{{compound}} is only used when two independent words are joined without modification. In other cases, please use the following alternatives:

• For combination involving a prefix or suffix added to a base word, use {{prefix}} or {{suffix}} instead.
• For combination involving both a prefix and a suffix (no base word), use {{confix}} instead.
• For combination of independent words where the result is not just concatenation, as in brunch, use {{blend}} instead.

Languages other than English

For languages other than English, the parameters lang, sc, tr1, t1, alt1, etc. are supported, to specify language, script, transliteration, translation, and alternative representation.

For words in languages other than English, a “lang” parameter with a language code should be added:

{{compound|brand|kast|lang=nl}}

Furthermore, there is the possibility to give translations of the parts by using “t1”, “t2”, …:

{{compound|brand|kast|t1=fire|t2=closet|lang=nl}}

Alternative representation forms can be given by using the “alt1”, “alt2”, … parameters:

{{compound|branden|kast|t1=burn|t2=closet|alt1=brand|lang=nl}}

brand (“burn”) +‎ kast (“closet”)

Finally, you can use it to show the etymology of foreign-language compounds in borrowed words as well. In this case, you usually do not want the entry to appear as a compound of that language. Use the nocat= parameter for this (as seen on the page fierljeppen):

{{compound|fier|ljeppe|t1=far|t2=to leap|lang=fy|nocat=1}}

fier (“far”) +‎ ljeppe (“to leap”)
